Initially, as he began visiting a Madurese village “A” to share his faith in Jesus, their response was very cold. But through contact with mutual friends who were followers of Jesus too, he was finally able to develop friendships and a few of those Madurese eventually committed their lives to Christ.
As this raised the ire of the rest of the village, a mob gathered and rushed to the home of some villagers one day while Norman was visiting. When they threatened to burn down the home, Norman stepped outside to face the angry crowd. The threatening mob surrounded Norman armed with their traditional sickle knives drawn and ready. The mood grew ugly as the crowd egged on its leader who then stepped forward and raised his knife to strike. Norman looked into the leaders face which was contorted with rage and then bowed his head and prayed in the name of Jesus, thinking that his last moment had come. But suddenly, the attacker’s expression changed from anger to fear and he could not move to thrust the blow. It was as if his arm had become paralyzed. The rest of the mob immediately fled in fear, taking their bewildered leader with them. When the Muslim owner of the house, S, witnessed the miracle and realized the power of Isa Almaseh, he believed in Him immediately.
Accused of proselytization, an offense which could earn him a prison sentence, Norman was called before local police with S. S did not remain quiet but boldly stated that he too was a follower of Jesus. The police released them both, stating that it was not against the law for Christians to meet together. What an amazing thing the Lord has done.
As we contemplate the work among the Muslim people groups of Southeast Asia , there are times when the seemingly impossible task overwhelms us. But what would have happened if Norman had only asked…“what can I do for the Madurese?” The reputation of this people group may have paralyzed him. In his own strength, He couldn’t do much. But Norman ’s eyes of faith along with his obedience, allowed God to work. A community of faith in Jesus was born. God is the God of the Impossible. And He is able to do so much beyond all we ask or think…. How about you? What are you asking God? Are you asking for the impossible?
