Tembilahan

Mosque

A short wooden fence separates the Tembilahan mosque, a shiny palace of tile, from the dirty riverfront shops and dock area. Four tall green minarets rise alongside the silver dome of the mosque. The walls and curving staircases are made from beige, white and black speckled marble decorated with flowing Arabic script. The floor inside is made of the same smooth stone. During prayer time men line up at the front of the mosque and women in their head coverings remain in the back.

The mosque seems at odds with the rest of Tembilahan city. The sun brightly reflects off the marble while a few feet away, on the opposite side of the fence, litter sits in messy piles and vendors listlessly wait for potential customers.

With what shall I come before the Lord
and bow down before the exalted God?
Micah 6:6a (NIV)

  • Pray that the Riau Malay will come to realize that God is not pleased with outward religious rituals but with the condition and attitude of people's hearts.
  • Pray for God to open up spiritual eyes so that the Riau Malay will come to know Jesus as God, who came to earth in human form, defeating the power of sin and death.
