Sawahlunto

Church

Many of the descendants of the orang rantai continue to live in the city giving it a far less monocultural feel than the rest of West Sumatra and a more sizeable non-Muslim population. Church bells still ring out on a Sunday but none of the people who respond to their summons are Minangkabau and even if they did they would not likely feel comfortable or welcome in what would be a very alien atmosphere.

  • Pray that many churchgoers would follow Jesus truly and invite their Minangkabau neighbours to join them on their spiritual journey, contextualizing what it means to be a follower of Jesus.

  • Pray that the Minangkabau would come to understand that what they see in Western movies and read on social media is not reflective of Christianity.

  • Pray that their misperceptions about Christianity would be torn down.
