Sawahlunto Museum

Sawahlunto Museum

In the museum you notice a display of large cooking pots.

During the colonial era, this settlement was formed around the very first coal mines in South East Asia and became the home of hundreds of orang rantai (chained forced labourers) who were shackled day and night. They were poor people and political prisoners from all over the country who were sent here to work in the mines. The giant pots were used to cook their communal meals. Also in this museum is a display of old photos that show the contrast in lifestyle between these prisoners and the Dutch population who built churches, enjoyed visiting the theatre and wearing oversize hats to picnics at local beauty spots.

  • Pray for release from the hurts and bitterness resulting from the injustices suffered by the families of the people of this city in the past.

  • Pray that the anger and injustice evident in the museum displays would not hinder members of the present generation from recognising that the Father of Jesus is more than just the God of their ancestors' oppressors.
