Batusangkar

As you drive into this city on the hill, the woman sitting next to you explains that this town is the cultural centre of the Minangkabau people and its name is a combination of the words for 'cage' and 'rock'. She doesn't know the significance of the 'cage' but says you must visit three interesting rocks.

The first rock you visit is a triangular-shaped stone about 55 cm tall, called Batu Batikam - "the stabbed stone".

Batu Batikam

The story behind this rock is a civil war between two groups of Minangkabau villages under the control of royal step-brothers who fell out over how the people should be ruled. One favoured a more democratic approach, the other favoured a hierarchical approach.

How do you think the conflict ended?

The democratic faction drove their opponents to Java (a neighbouring island).

The hierarchy defenders won, subduing their opponents.

Bloodshed was avoided and compromise was reached.
