Bukittinggi

Welcome to the tourist capital of West Sumatra.

This former Dutch resort town, perched in the coastal mountain range, enjoys a cooler climate than the coastal cities. The cooler temperatures, beautiful scenery and increasing number of hotels attract tourists from all over the world.

Pray that followers of Jesus who pass through this town will not inadvertently bring His name into disrepute by the clothes they wear or the way they behave but rather be salt and light so the people of this town may understand the difference between 'westerner' and true follower of Jesus.

The town is best known for this Clock Tower (known locally as Jam Gadang - the 'Big Clock'). Built, in 1926 during the Dutch occupation, in the centre of the city, the tower is now capped with a traditional Minangkabau-style roof. Where ever you go in West Sumatra the Minangkabau people will ask, "Have you visited the Jam Gadang?"

On arriving in Athens, Paul "walked around and looked carefully ..." (Acts 17:23)

Do you have time for a careful walk around Bukittinggi to see what might be discovered about the people who live here?
