Along the Siak River

Fish Market

In the basement of the traditional mall, the smell of fish and spices permeates the air. To the foreigner this may seem an overpowering smell but all the Indonesians milling around seem to find it pleasant or at least tolerable. Some vendors offer samples of freshly fried crispy potato slices dipped in chili pepper. Straw baskets are laden with dried fish of all varieties: small, large, smoked and dried, Siamese, sliced open and ones with large eyes. These are common sights and smells for the Riau Malay people, as fish is one of their staple foods.

The Kingdom of Heaven is like a fishing net that was thrown into the water and caught fish of every kind. When the net was full, they dragged it up onto the shore, sat down, and sorted the good fish into crates, but threw the bad ones away.
Matthew 13:47-48 (NLT)

  • Pray that the Riau Malay would have spiritual eyes to be able to discern what is true and good.
  • Pray that Riau Province would send "fishers of men" to other people groups throughout Indonesia and beyond.
