A Secret Art

The distinctive traditional sound of drums and gongs can be heard coming from a clearing beside a mosque on the river bank. Pairs of young boys and girls learn and practice hard for their traditional martial arts performance. Unlike other forms of martial arts, locals are proud that this one draws its principles from the teachings of Islam. In reality it is more than that, as it incorporates animistic practices.

As we climb up the bank for a better view, a local man dressed in traditional clothes greets us and begins to proudly explain the practice of the martial arts currently on display. Hidden powers such as invulnerability and supernatural evasion are given as examples of the martial arts master’s capabilities. As illustration he shares how a master was rolled up in a woven mat and pierced with knives. When the mat was unrolled, the man emerged unharmed, having been protected by his guardian spirit.  The spirits of previous masters play a key role in providing supernatural abilities and as such the visiting, cleaning of, and praying at the graves of these masters is regarded as an essential part of the tradition.

"You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven."
Matt. 5:43-45a (NIV)

  • Pray against the animistic practice of calling upon spirits in order to gain more power. May they be drawn to Jesus’ teaching to love your enemies.
  • Pray that families who keep the traditional martial arts secrets will be set free from the bondage of these spirits.
  • Pray also for protection for the children who are taught the basics of this martial art form during their primary school years, that this will not be a stronghold of the Enemy in their lives.
